Application:

Featuring the largest point angle of all the insert shapes, these round inserts provide the strongest cutting edge of any insert shape. They are recommended for external turning applications with heavy cutting forces and vibration and high feed rates, such as plunging, roughing, and intermittent cutting.

Insert shapes are available with a range of point angles. In general, inserts with a large point angle have a stronger cutting edge but produce more vibration and require more machine power than inserts with a small point angle. Inserts with a small point angle are more versatile, provide better accessibility for detailed cutting, produce less vibration, and require less machine power than inserts with a large point angle, but they have a weaker cutting edge and may be more prone to heat damage.

Inserts are available with a negative or positive basic shape. Negative inserts have a 0° clearance angle. They provide good edge strength and are recommended for external turning and heavy cutting applications. Double-sided negative inserts offer twice as many cutting edges as positive inserts, but single-sided negative inserts provide the best stability in heavy roughing applications. Positive inserts have a clearance angle that is greater than 0° and are a good choice for internal turning applications and external turning applications on slender workpieces. Positive inserts are single sided and produce lower cutting forces than negative inserts.

In addition to normal milling operations, there are certain applications that are particularly damaging to carbide. Here are some of the most difficult jobs that demand a lot of strength from the shape of the insert:

  • Milling of castings, where the axial depth often varies throughout the cut,
  • Workpieces with hard spots or inclusions that cause unpredictable insert life,
  • Raw materials that are flame or plasma cut, leaving very hard surfaces to machine,
  • Forgings or castings with slag or scale on the surface that can result in the notching of the insert,
  • Hardened steels, tool steels and cast irons, and
  • Heat resistant materials like Inconel, titanium and Hastelloy.

Solid carbide provides better rigidity than high speed steel. It is extremely heat resistant and used for high speed applications on 45steel, cast iron, nonferrous materials, plastics and other tough-to-machine materials.
